چکیده

The depletion of gluons as the parton flux traverses a nucleus in a heavy-ion collision can influence the production rate of heavy-quark states. Thus the suppression of J/ψ can be due to gluon depletion in the initial state in addition to nuclear and hadronic absorption in the final state. A formalism is developed to describe the depletion effect. It is shown that, without constraints from other experimental facts beside the J/ψ suppression data in pA and AB collisions, it is not possible to determine the relative importance of depletion vs absorption. Possible relevance to the enhanced suppression seen in the Pb-Pb data is mentioned but not studied.

The effects of gluon depletion on J/ψ suppression in pA and AA collisions

The enhanced suppression of J/ψ production at large xF in pA collisions is studied in the framework of gluon depletion at large x1. The nonperturbative process that modifies the gluon distribution as the gluons propagate in nuclear matter is described by an evolution equation with a kernal to be determined by phenomenology. With nuclear shadowing and anti-shadowing taken into account, the effec...

Enhanced J/ψ Suppression Due to Gluon Depletion

The nonlinear effect of gluon depletion in the collision of large nuclei can be large. It is due to multiple scatterings among comoving partons initiated by primary scattering of partons in the colliding nuclei. The effect can give rise to substantial suppression of J/ψ production in very large nuclei, even if the linear depletion effect is insignificant for the collisions of nuclei of smaller ...

J/Ψ suppressions in a thermally equilibrating quark-gluon plasma at RHIC

We estimate the survival probability of J/ψ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, using both short-distance QCD and nuclear absorption mechanism. The suppression is found to be almost 100 percent for a thermally equilibrating quark-gluon plasma. The measurement of such a huge suppression of J/ψ may suggest the existence of a deconfined partonic medium, possibly a thermalised quark-gluon plasma,...

J/ψ Gluonic Dissociation Revisited : I. Fugacity, Flux And Formation Time Effects

We revisit the standard treatment [Xu, Kharzeev, Satz and Wang, Phys. Rev. C 53, 3051 (1996)] of J/ψ suppression due to gluonic bombardment in an equilibrating quark-gluon plasma. Effects arising from gluon fugacity, relative g − ψ flux, and ψ meson formation time are correctly incorporated in the formulation of the gluon number density, velocity-weighted cross section, and the survival probabi...

J/ψ Suppression as a Signal for the Quark-Gluon Plasma

We review the search for the quark-gluon plasma using the signal of the suppression of J/ψ production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Recent anomalous J/ψ suppression in high-energy Pb-Pb collisions observed by the NA50 Collaboration are examined and compared with earlier results from pA and nucleus-nucleus collisions with heavy ions of smaller mass numbers. The anomalous suppression of J/...
